Road and lane closures: June 2 - June 9


Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, June 2, through Sunday, June 9, 2013 – newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Highway 1/Rocky Creek Viaduct Project:  June 2  – June 7
  • Daytime roadwork on Highway 1 continues next week from 7 am to 5 pm Monday, June 3 through Friday, June 7
  • There WILL be NIGHT ROADWORK starting Sunday, June 2 through Thursday, June 6 (Friday 7am) from 9 pm to 7 am
  • There will be NO OVERNIGHT FULL closures next week
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes

Highway 1 at Rocky Creek has one-way signalized traffic control 24/7. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time during daytime roadwork.

Highway 1 through Big Sur: June 3 – June 7
  • Day time shoulder work and vegetation spaying continues along the Big Sur coast between Little Sur River Bridge and Hurricane Point.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.

Highway 1/ Salinas Road to Watsonville:  June 3 – June 7
  • Daytime work on Highway 1, from Salinas Road to the Santa Cruz County Line, will result in alternating lane closures—northbound and southbound—between 7 am and 4:00 p.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 15 minutes.

Highway 68:  June 4 – June 7
  • Sewer work on Highway 68, between David Avenue and Morse Drive, will result in lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 5 minutes.

Prunedale Improvement Project : June 3 – June 7
  • Overnight highway construction will result in lane closures on Hwy 101 between Boronda Road and Pesante Road.
    • Hours: 7:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Prunedale Improvement Project at Crazy Horse Canyon: June 3 – June 7
  • Night work continues between Mallory Canyon Road and Echo Valley Road from Monday, June 3, to Friday, June 7.
  • There will be alternating lane closures as needed between 7:30 p.a. and 6 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.
  • Crews will be moving equipment and removing bridge falsework.

San Juan Road Interchange: June 3 – June 7
·         Overnight work on Hwy 101, between Dunbarton Road and Cannon Road/Rocks Road, will result in lane closures between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 6 a.m.
·         Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes

Blackie Road Safety Improvement Project: June 3 – June 9
·         Roadway construction continues between Borromeo Drive to approximately one mile west of Borromeo Drive going to Castroville
·         Blackie Road will be open to emergency vehicles, school buses, local residents and patrons of local businesses
·         Motorists can expect delays of approximately 30 minutes.



NOTE: The AIDS/Life Cycle Bicycle Ride will use portions of the state highway system in Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties next week in the following locations:

  • Sunday, June 2, the cyclists will enter Santa Cruz County on Hwy. 1 near Ano Nuevo State Reserve to Harvey West Park in the City of Santa Cruz.
  • Monday, June 3, the cyclists will use Hwy. 1 from Moss Landing and southbound Hwy. 101 in Monterey County to San Lorenzo Park in Gonzalez.
  • Tuesday, June 4, the cyclists will use Hwy. 101 near Jolon to the Paso Robles Fairgrounds in San Luis Obispo County. 
  • Wednesday, June 5, the cyclists will use Hwy. 46 West and Hwy. 1 between Cambria and Guadalupe.  The cyclists will use Highway 166 West ending at Preisker Park in Santa Barbara County.
  • Thursday, June 6, the cyclists will use State Route 135 and Hwy. 1 to Lompoc .
  • Friday, June 7, the cyclists will use Hwy’s. 246, Hwy. 1 and 101 from Lompoc to Carpinteria.

The CHP will oversee these highway closures areas.  Caltrans reminds motorists to be aware of these cyclists and any support vehicles.

Highway 1/Rocky Creek Viaduct Project:  May 28  – May 31
  • Daytime roadwork on Highway 1 continues next week from 7 am to 5 pm Wednesday, May 29 through Friday, May 31
  • There will be no daytime work on Monday, May 27 or Tuesday, May 28.

  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.

  • Day time shoulder work and vegetation spaying continues along the Big Sur coast between Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Hurricane Point.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.
Route 218 at Seaside/Sand City: May 29 – May 31
  • Crews will be conducting maintenance operations at Tioga Avenue and at Sand Dunes Drive between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.
Highway 1/North of Moss Landing: May 28 – May 30
  • Crews will be conducting grinding operations at Springfield Road North of Moss Landing between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 15 minutes.

  • Crews will be conducting pavement repairs along Highway 101 at San Ardo near Paris Valley Road between 8:00 am and 2:30 p.m.

Prunedale Improvement Project between Boronda and Blackie: May 28 – May 31
  • Highway construction continues between Boronda Road and Blackie road between May 28 and May 31
  • There will be no work during the Memorial Day weekend.

  • Crews will place concrete dividers along Highway 101 at Ralph Lane and Highway 101 on Tuesday, May 28 between 8:00 pm and 6:00 a.m
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.
Prunedale Improvement Project at Crazy Horse Canyon: May 28 - 31

HWY 101 TRAFFIC SWITCH COMING MAY 22


New alignment will take all Hwy. 101 traffic over Russell and Espinosa Roads

The next phase of Caltrans’ Prunedale Improvement Project will make travel through the intersection where Russell and Espinosa Roads used to cross Highway 101 much safer. On Wednesday, May 22, Caltrans will move southbound Hwy. 101 traffic on to the new alignment that takes all Hwy. 101 traffic up and over Russell and Espinosa Roads.

The traffic switch will happen after 10 p.m. on May 22.

In addition to moving all Hwy 101 traffic on to the new alignment, Caltrans will also open the new Sala Road interchange. The new interchange will allow motorists on northbound Hwy 101 to exit on to Sala Road, turn right on to Harrison Road, and access Russell and Espinosa Roads safely. Travelers on southbound Hwy 101 will need to go to Boronda Road, turn left on Boronda Road, and left on Main St. to access Russell Road and Espinosa. 

This traffic switch will allow Granite Construction and MCM Construction, Caltrans’ contractors for the Prunedale Improvement Project, to complete work on the southbound Hwy. 101 overcrossing, which will be finished later this year.

The following day, Thursday, May 23, crews will re-stripe Hwy 101 at Ralph Lane, adding a double-yellow line to prohibit left and U-turns across the highway.

To travel south on Hwy 101 from Ralph Lane motorists will need to:
    • Turn right on Hwy. 101
    • Turn right on to Reese Circle
    • Turn right on to the Prunedale South Road overpass
    • Turn right on Blackie Rd.
    • Turn right on to southbound Hwy. 101

  • Northbound Highway 101 will be reduced to one lane on May 20 between Russell/Espinosa and Ralph Lane from hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 15 minutes
Prunedale Improvement Project at Ralph Lane: May 23

  • Crews will restripe Hwy 101 at Ralph Lane and Highway 101 on Thursday, May 23
  • The new double-yellow line means that left turns and U-turns across Highway 101 will not be legal.
    • This is a permanent change
  • To travel south on Hwy 101 from Ralph Lane motorists will need to:
    • Turn right on Hwy. 101
    • Turn right on to Reese Circle
    • Turn right on to the Prunedale South Road overpass
    • Turn right on Blackie Rd.
    • Turn right on to southbound Hwy. 101

South County Highway 198: May 20 – May 24

·       Highway construction between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5 p.m., from Monday, May 20, to Friday, May 24.
·       Motorists can expect delays of approximately 5 minutes

TRAFFIC CROSSOVER ON HIGHWAY 101 NEAR RED BARN BEGINS SUNDAY, MAY 19

Overnight work for new interchange will also temporarily prohibit access to Dunbarton Road and San Juan Road; motorists advised to use San Miguel Canyon Road instead.
 
MONTEREY COUNTY – Caltrans roadwork on the new Hwy. 101/San Juan Road Interchange will require temporary traffic crossovers on Hwy. 101, between Dunbarton Road and Cole Road, beginning the night of Sunday, May 19 at 9 pm.

The first crossover will move southbound Hwy. 101 traffic onto the northbound side of the highway for one week, between May 19 and May 23. Northbound Hwy. 101 traffic will move onto the southbound side of the highway beginning the night of June 3; this crossover will go through June 6.
 
·       The crossovers will take place overnight, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
·        During the crossover times:
o   Access to Dunbarton Road and San Juan Road from 101 will be prohibited—motorists are advised to use San Miguel Canyon.
o   Access to Hwy 101 from San Juan Road will be prohibited—motorists are advised to use San Miguel Canyon.
·       Electronic message signs will be in place on Hwy 101 to give drivers advance notice about the changes.
·       CHP will be assisting with traffic control.

The traffic crossovers are necessary to allow drainage work on both sides of Hwy. 101 to be done more safely and efficiently.

Highway 1/Rocky Creek Viaduct Project:  May 12  – May 17

  • Daytime roadwork on Highway 1 continues next week from 7 am to 5 pm Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17.
  • There will be ONE NIGHT of work and FULL overnight closure next week—Thursday, May 16 from 9 pm to 7 am Friday, May 17
The closure is needed to shift traffic onto the completed portion of the viaduct.

Highway 1/ Anderson Canyon Bridge:  May 13 – May 17

Highway 1/ Lime Creek Bridge:  May 13 – May 16

Traffic Switch On Northbound Hwy. 101 Starts May 13


On Monday, May 13, Caltrans and Granite Construction Company and MCM Construction, the joint venture contractors for the Prunedale Improvement Project, will be switching traffic on northbound HWY 101 on to a new alignment that will take the traffic over the Russell/Espinosa intersection in North Salinas.

The traffic switch, which will happen after 10 p.m. on May 13, will significantly affect drivers on northbound Hwy 101 who need to access Espinosa Rd.

The detour from northbound HWY 101 to Espinosa Road:
·   Stay heading north on HWY 101;
·   Turn right on to Reese Circle;
·   Go over the new Prunedale South Road Overcrossing;
·   Turn right on to Blackie Road;
·   Turn right on Southbound Highway 101, and
·   Turn right on Espinosa Road.

This detour will be in effect from the night of May 13 through the night of Wednesday, May 22.

On the night of Wednesday, May 22, Caltrans will switch the southbound HWY 101 traffic on to the new Russell/Espinosa overcrossing.

When all traffic is moved up and over the Russell/Espinosa intersection, vehicles will be able to use either the new Sala Road Interchange or the Boronda exit to get to Russell Rd. or Espinosa Rd.

These traffic pattern changes will be in place throughout the summer.

MONTEREY COUNTY – Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for the areas between Salinas and North Monterey County from Sunday, May 5, through Sunday, May 12, 2013– newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Highway 1/Rocky Creek Viaduct Project:  May 5  – May 10

  • Daytime roadwork on Highway 1 continues next week from 7 am to 5 pm Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10.
  • There will be no night work or overnight closures next week—from Sunday, May 5 through Friday, May 9.

Work next week will consist of removing the deck forms and placing the viaduct metal barrier.
