TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF BLACKIE ROAD BEGINS SEPTEMBER 6

On Tuesday, September 6, 2011, Granite Construction and MCM Construction, Caltrans’ contractors for the 101 Prunedale Improvement Project, will close Blackie Road from Highway 101 to Borromeo Drive for approximately two months.

The closure is necessary to install a new box culvert that will go underneath Blackie Road. Box culverts are used to channel water; in this case the new culvert will channel water from Prunedale Creek safely underneath Blackie Road, which should help with drainage in the area.

During construction there will be no entrance to Blackie Road from either Highway 101 or Prunedale South Road. Blackie Road at Prunedale South Road will be closed to all but emergency response vehicles.

Letters are being sent to residents and businesses in the area to let them know about the closure, which will mean out-of-direction travel for those who use Blackie Road to access Highway 101, and for those traveling on Highway 101 who need to reach addresses along the Blackie Road area. (Please see graphic below for area of closure and detour routes to/from Highway 101 to Blackie Road.)

This accelerated construction is necessary to install the new drainage culvert before the rainy season begins. By closing Blackie Road completely, the work can be done in only two months.  The other option is to have this section of Blackie Road torn up with construction for at least six months, with traffic controls in place; this option would also delay the overall 101 Prunedale Improvement Project.

This road closure and detour was planned and coordinated with Monterey County Public Works, North County Fire District, North Monterey County Unified School District, and Monterey County Supervisor Lou Calcagno.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience from this closure.  Throughout the construction of 101 Prunedale Improvement Project many communities may be affected similarly.  We ask for your patience and understanding while we work as efficiently as possible to make travel through these areas safer for everyone.

Please contact me if you have any special needs that might require attention, or for any questions you may have about this project.

Thank you,
Sharon

DETOUR FOR HWY 1 SALINAS ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT SCHEDULED TO BEGIN

This information is about another big highway project - the HWY 1/Salinas Road Interchange. It will affect traffic on Hwy 1, so I figured I'd post it here since many of us travel on Hwy 1. Please email me if you have any questions!

Sharon

Traffic patterns on Highway 1 near Salinas Road will change on August 15, when a new detour road paralleling Highway 1 will open.

The detour, which will affect southbound traffic on Highway 1, will take vehicles off Highway 1 and to the west of the area where the new Salinas Road overcrossing will be built; the detour road rejoins Highway 1 at Jensen Road.

This means that southbound traffic on Highway 1 will not have access to Salinas Road and will have to use the posted Hwy 129 detour to access Salinas Road.

Northbound traffic will still have access to Salinas Road.

This is the first phase of the detours for the Highway 1/Salinas Road Interchange Project; it is scheduled to last one week.

The second phase of the detour is scheduled to open approximately one week after the first phase, and will consist of putting the northbound Highway 1 traffic on the detour with the southbound Highway 1 traffic. This detour is expected to last one to two weeks and means that both southbound and northbound traffic will not have access to Salinas Road and will have to use the posted Hwy 129 detour to access Salinas Road.

Upon completion of the second phase of the detour, both southbound and northbound traffic will have access to Salinas Road using the Salinas Road detour.

All detour durations are subject to construction progress.

The Highway 1/Salinas Road Interchange Project will construct a new interchange at Salinas Road and Highway 1, north of Moss Landing near the Santa Cruz county line. The new interchange will include construction of a three-lane structure (Salinas Road) over Highway 1 with three diamond-type ramps and one southbound loop on-ramp. A frontage road (Hilltop Road) will be constructed from Jensen Road to Salinas Road west of Highway 1 and connect opposite the southbound ramps.

This $30 million project adds vital safety improvements to a high accident intersection and will reduce delays on Highway 1. The Highway 1/Salinas Road Interchange was funded by Prop. 1B, a state transportation bond measure approved by voters in 2006.

o    The Northbound San Miguel Canyon on-ramp
o    The Southbound San Miguel Canyon off ramp

·         Granite Construction will continue hauling materials in and out of Reese Circle during the work week. This will not result in any lane closures, but there will be flaggers in the area directing traffic, and there may be brief delays.
