ROAD CONSTRUCTION WILL CAUSE TRAFFIC DELAYS ON ESPINOSA ROAD NEAR U.S. 101 TODAY (OCT 31)

Road construction on Espinosa Road near U.S. 101 in Salinas will cause traffic delays between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Thursday, October 31. The work will cause one way reversing traffic control. Motorists can expect delays in both directions of Espinosa Road, and are advised to take alternate routes, if possible.

Today’s work is necessary for the final paving of Espinosa Road, and the construction of the new Highway 101 South Overcrossing at Espinosa Road.

When completed, the $209 million Prunedale Improvement Project will eliminate left turns across a 9-mile
section of Highway 101 from Prunedale to Salinas. The improved road conditions will reduce not only the number of accidents, but also delays on U.S. 101, providing much needed congestion relief for approximately 100,000 drivers every day.  The project is expected to be completed in 2014.

INSTALLATION OF BARRIERS TO ELIMINATE LEFT TURNS ACROSS U.S. 101 AT TUSTIN, MESSICK, AND MALLORY CANYON BEGINS OCTOBER 14

As a result of the new Crazy Horse Canyon Interchange, left turns across U.S. 101 between Echo Valley Road and San Miguel Canyon Road are no longer necessary. Beginning  Monday night, October 14, Caltrans’ contractors for the U.S. 101 Prunedale Improvement Project will begin restriping the left turn lanes on U.S. 101 at Messick Road, Tustin Road, and Mallory Canyon Road – making  left turns at these intersections illegal.

On the night of October 15, they will begin installing k-rail (concrete barriers) on U.S.101 at Tustin Road, Messick Road, and Mallory Canyon Road. This will permanently eliminate left turns across U.S. 101 to and from Tustin Road, Messick Road, and Mallory Canyon Road in Prunedale.

Travelers will now use the new Crazy Horse Canyon Interchange and the upgraded San Miguel Canyon Overcrossing to access local residences and businesses. The key issue is safety. The combination of high speed through traffic on US 101 conflicting with traffic trying to turn left across the highway provides a less than desirable operational and safety condition.

While closing off these left turns across the highway will cause slight increases in travel time for some area residents and visitors, the opening of the new Crazy Horse Canyon Interchange on Tuesday, October 15, will make travel much easier and safer throughout the corridor.

The Prunedale Improvement Project, which is approximately 80 percent complete, addresses safety and operational concerns along the U.S. 101 corridor between North Salinas and Echo Valley Road. Over the last ten years, there have been nearly 2300 accidents along this 8-mile-long stretch of highway, resulting in 25 fatalities and close to 700 injuries.

More information about the Prunedale Improvement Project is available on the Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s website, www.tamcmonterey.org

TAMC AND CALTRANS CELEBRATE OPENING OF NEW CRAZY HORSE CANYON INTERCHANGE IN PRUNEDALE

The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) will join Caltrans and Monterey County Supervisor Lou Calcagno on Monday, October 14, to celebrate the opening of the new Crazy Horse Canyon/Echo Valley Road Interchange on U.S.Highway101 in Prunedale.

The new interchange, which will open to traffic the morning of Tuesday, October 15, is a key milestone for the Prunedale Improvement Project. Motorists traveling on Highway 101 will be able to exit on to Crazy Horse Canyon Road and Echo Valley Road without having to make a left turn across Highway 101 traffic. The interchange will increase safety and traffic flow throughout the corridor.

With the opening of the new interchange, crews will install k-rail (concrete barriers) on U.S. 101 at Tustin Road and Messick Road. This will permanently eliminate left turns across U.S. 101 to and from Tustin Road and Messick Road in Prunedale.

The Prunedale Improvement Project began construction in February 2011. The project includes three new interchanges along U.S. 101 in North Monterey County located at Russell and Espinosa Roads, Blackie and Reese Roads, and Crazy Horse Canyon and Echo Valley Roads. The project will also provide a solid concrete median barrier from Crazy Horse Canyon Rd. to Espinosa Rd. Additionally, improvements are being made to the San Miguel Canyon overpass, as well as to many local roads throughout the area to improve accessibility and local traffic flow.

When completed, the $209 million Prunedale Improvement Project will eliminate left turns across a 9-mile section of Highway 101 from Prunedale to Salinas. The improved road conditions will reduce not only the number of accidents, but also delays on U.S. 101, providing much needed congestion relief for approximately 100,000 drivers every day.  The project is expected to be completed in 2014.
