SPEED LIMIT ON HWY 101 THROUGH SAN JUAN ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT LOWERS TO 55 MPH

With the start of construction on the new US 101/San Juan Road Interchange Project, the speed limit along Highway 101, from Dunbarton Road in Aromas to just beyond Cole Road in San Benito County, will be reduced – from 60 mph to 55 mph.

The lower speed limit zone is adjacent to the Prunedale Improvement Project area, where speed limits are also reduced. Speed limits are generally lowered throughout highway construction corridors to increase safety for travelers and those working in the area.

In addition to the lower speed limits, drivers need to be aware that fines for violations are doubled in construction areas. Signs notifying motorists about the lower speed limits and double fines in the San Juan Road Interchange construction area went up when construction began on December 3, 2012.

The 101/San Juan Road Interchange Project addresses safety and operational concerns along the Highway 101 corridor between Dunbarton Rd. and Cole Rd. The project will remove three at-grade intersections and construct one interchange near the Red Barn. The new interchange will help improve safety and reduce the congestion along this heavily traveled stretch of US 101.

The $90 million project is scheduled to be done in 2014.
