The Transportation Agency for Monterey County and Caltrans will celebrate the start of construction on the 13-mile long project known as the US 101/Prunedale Improvement Project (PIP) on Friday June 10.
The ceremony, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Caltrans' construction lot on Harrision Rd near Russell Rd in Salinas, will feature speakers from Caltrans, Granite Construction (the contractor for the job), elected officials, and members of the community.
When completed in late 2014, the $209 million Prunedale Improvement Project will upgrade a segment of four-lane highway to freeway, construct two new interchanges, a new undercrossing, a new overcrossing, modifications to an existing interchange section, various local road improvements and install a concrete median barrier at various locations throughout the project limits, which will improve access to the local businesses.
Some of the project benefits include:
1) eliminating difficult intersection left-turns by closing the gaps with a solid barrier;
2) reducing delays on Hwy. 101 by providing two new interchanges, an undercrossing and an overcrossing;
3) addressing safety concerns in a high accident corridor by making all the above-mentioned changes;
4) providing safer access for local businesses and residents and relieving congestion for 60,000 to 80,000 vehicles per day.
