CONSTRUCTION ON US 101 SAN JUAN ROAD INTERCHANGE BEGINS DECEMBER 3

Caltrans will begin construction of the new San Juan Road Interchange Project on Monday, December 3. The $91 million project will significantly reduce congestion and increase safety on the section of Highway 101 between Dunbarton Road in Monterey County and Cole Road in San Benito County by removing three major at-grade intersections (San Juan Road, Dunbarton Road and Cole Road) and replacing them with a single interchange near the Red Barn at San Juan Road and Route 101.

“This section of the highway has been a choke point for too long,” says Lou Calcagno, Monterey County Supervisor for District 2. “This interchange will make it easier and safer for everyone traveling in the area.”

More than 63,000 vehicles travel through the US 101/San Juan Road area every day – including agricultural trucks and visitors to the region. Eliminating the at-grade intersections and left turn conflicts in the corridor will convert the section of US 101 within the project limits from expressway to freeway.

Caltrans awarded the $48.7 million construction contract for the US 101 San Juan Road Interchange Project to Granite Construction Company and MCM Construction, a joint venture, on September 27. The contract was approved on November 6. Construction is expected to be completed in 2014.

An official groundbreaking ceremony for the San Juan Road Interchange Project, with project advocates and funding partners, will be held early next year.

The grass is always (getting) greener on the other side

Granite Construction, Caltrans' contractor for the Prunedale Improvement Project, has placed sod and planted seeds on the slopes near Echo Valley Road and Crazy Horse Canyon Road - and they're beginning to show signs of growth! The seeds are native plants, which are meant to last for a long time, and the sod is taking root. A few more weeks of moderate weather could leave us with a very healthy slope come winter!
