Road and lane closures for Oct. 28 through Nov. 4


Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for the areas between Salinas and North Monterey County from Sunday, October 28, through Sunday, November 4, 2012– newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Highway 1/Rocky Creek Viaduct Project: Oct. 28 – Nov. 4
·  Daytime roadwork on Hwy 1 continues from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
·  Hwy. 1 @ Rocky Creek has one-way has one-way signalized traffic control 24/7. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time during daytime roadwork.

·   Overnight closures of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek (Mile Marker 59.5) are scheduled to begin for three nights from Sunday, Oct. 28, through Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 9 pm to 7 am each night.

·   No overnight closures are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31 or Thursday, Nov. 1 due to local events.

·   In order to minimize traffic impact as part of the project, there will be advance notification for motorists, residents and businesses via a traffic hotline, electronic message signs and email updates.



Prunedale Improvement Project: Crazy Horse Canyon Road October 29
·         Caltrans will temporarily close off access from Hwy 101 to Crazy Horse Canyon Rd. the night of Monday, October 29.
o    Access to Crazy Horse Canyon Road from Hwy 101 will close at 9 p.m. on Oct. 29.
o    It will reopen at 6 a.m. on October 30.
o    Emergency responders will be able to get through.
o    All other traffic will access Crazy Horse Canyon Rd. via the following detour:
§  Exit Hwy 101 at Boronda Rd.
§  Head east on Boronda Rd. to San Juan Grade Road.
§  Turn left on San Juan Grade Road and follow it to Crazy Horse Canyon Road.
§  Turn left on Crazy Horse Canyon Road.

Prunedale Improvement Project: Oct. 30
·         Night work will close one northbound lane of Hwy. 101 between Mallory Canyon Road and Echo Valley Road on Tuesday, October 30, from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
o    Crews will be working along the shoulder.

Prunedale Improvement Project: Nov. 1
·         Caltrans night work will close one northbound lane of Hwy. 101 between Boronda Rd. and Ralph Lane between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1.
o    Crews will be paving


Prunedale Improvement Project: San Miguel Canyon Rd. and Hwy 101
  • Construction work on San Miguel Canyon Rd., near Prunedale North Rd. and the Prunedale Shopping Center, began on Monday, June 25.  This work involves excavating the roadway to install new traffic signals, curbs and sidewalks, and rebuild the roadway.
o    Motorists can expect delays of about 15 minutes in the area.
o    Work will be done during the day.
o    Businesses are open, but access will change as work progresses.


Traffic Advisories from Monterey County Public Works
·         On Monday, October 15, Granite Construction, Monterey County Public Works’ contractor for the Blackie Road Safety Improvements Project, will temporarily close Blackie Road, from Borromeo Drive to a half a mile west of Moro Terrace, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, for approximately three weeks to all but local traffic and emergency response vehicles.
o    Construction is scheduled to start on October 15 and go through November 2; during this time:
§  All businesses and places of worship in this area along Blackie Rd. will remain open;
§  Emergency response vehicles will have access at all times;
§  Local traffic, including those going to businesses in the area, will have access;
§  The speed limit in the construction area will be reduced to 25 M.P.H.;
§  Motorists can expect traffic delays of up to 30 minutes;
§  There will be construction noise during the day, with crews working from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
o    This closure is necessary to safely remove trees along Blackie Road. It is the first step of the $1.5 million Blackie Road Safety Improvements Project, which will widen, add shoulders, and repave Blackie Road.

Road and lane closures for Oct. 21 - 28


Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for the areas between Salinas and North Monterey County from Sunday, October 21, through Sunday, October 28, 2012– newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.


Highway 101 in Salinas: Oct. 21 – Oct. 24
·         A three-night concrete slab replacement project on a ¼ mile section of northbound Highway 101, between Airport Blvd and Sanborn Road, will take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21.
o    Overnight roadwork hours will be from 6 pm to 6 am each night. Closures are as follows:
§  The northbound on-ramp from Fairview Ave. to Hwy. 101
§  The northbound Sanborn Road off-ramp
§  The northbound  #2 (slow) lane between both locations

·         Roadwork consists of replacing deteriorated concrete sections with new ones through this stretch of the highway. Work is expected to be completed by 6 am on Wednesday, Oct. 24.


Highway 1/Rocky Creek Viaduct Project: Overnight Closures begin Oct. 22!
·         Daytime roadwork on Hwy 1 continues from dawn until dusk next week.
·         Overnight closures of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek (Mile Marker 59.5) are scheduled to begin for four nights from Monday, Oct. 22, through Thursday, Oct. 25, from 9 pm to 7 am each night.
o    Construction continues with drilling work for the viaduct columns.
o    Hwy. 1 @ Rocky Creek has one-way has one-way signalized traffic control 24/7. Traffic will be stopped for 10 minutes at a time during daytime roadwork.
o    However, full overnight closures will be scheduled five nights a week Sundays through Thursdays until February.
o    No full closures will occur on Friday/Saturday nights.

·         At this time, no overnight closures are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31 or Thursday, Nov. 1 due to local events.

US 101 EXIT TO CRAZY HORSE CANYON RD. TEMPORARILY CLOSED NIGHT OF OCTOBER 17



Caltrans work on the Prunedale Improvemet Project will temporarily close the US 101 exit to Crazy Horse Canyon Road the night of Wednesday, October 17. 

There is a detour available.

The Crazy Horse Canyon Rd. exit from US 101 will be closed at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17; it will reopen at 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 18.

During this closure:
  • Emergency responders will be able to use the Crazy Horse Canyon exit.
  • All other traffic will access Crazy Horse Canyon Rd. via the following detour:
    • Exit Hwy 101 at Boronda Rd.
    • Head east on Boronda Rd. to San Juan Grade Road.
    • Turn left on San Juan Grade Road and follow it to Crazy               Horse Canyon Road.
    • Turn left on Crazy Horse Canyon Road.

BRIEF FULL CLOSURE OF US 101 AT CRAZY HORSE CANYON SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT!


Monday night/Tuesday morning, Oct. 15/16, Caltrans will close U.S. Highway 101 in both directions for 45-60 minutes at Crazy Horse Road in Prunedale (Monterey County) to remove a temporary structure over the roadway as part of the $80 million STIP-funded Prunedale Improvement Project (PIP).

The PIP, which is upgrading nine miles from highway to freeway status by constructing new interchanges and overpasses, is the largest construction project in Caltrans District 5.

The closure will occur between midnight and 4 am and traffic will be held to ensure safety until removal is done. CHP will be on site and electronic message signs are posted.

A traffic advisory was issued last week and a reminder sent out today. This operation was originally scheduled for Oct. 11/12 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Prunedale Improvement Project: Crazy Horse Canyon Oct. 15
·   On Monday, October 15, crews will be removing the temporary bridge that has spanned Hwy 101 for several months.
o    This will require a FULL SHUTDOWN of Hwy 101 at Crazy Horse Canyon Road for approximately 40 minutes.
o    The closure will take place between midnight and 4 a.m.
o    Traffic will be held to ensure safety until removal is done.
o    CHP will be on site and electronic message signs are posted.

Highway 68: Oct. 12 – Oct. 19
·   A lane closure on Highway 68 from the Highway 1 interchange to the entrance of the Laguna Seca Raceway will take place during the overnight hours beginning Friday, Oct. 12 from 9 pm to 6 am. 
o    This roadwork to pave the shoulder of the highway will resume on Monday, Oct. 15, and go through Friday morning, Oct. 19. The overnight work hours are from 7 pm to 6 am.
o    Motorists will encounter one-way reversing traffic control with flaggers and can expect a delay not to exceed 15 minutes. 
o    Electronic message boards will be posted to assist motorists in traveling through this area.

o    No overnight closures of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek (Mile Marker 59.5) are currently scheduled for next week.
o    Construction next week will consist of drilling to begin installing the viaduct columns.

·       Night work on Hwy. 101, between Echo Valley Road and Crazy Horse Canyon Rd., will close one southbound lane between the hours of 7:30 p.m. and 6 a.m., from Monday, Oct. 8 through Thursday, Oct. 11.
o    Crews will be paving the southbound shoulder.

Highway 68: July 30 – November 15
·       Caltrans continues its work grinding and paving a seven-mile section of Highway 68 from the Highway 1 interchange to SPCA Road.
o    Roadwork will be done during overnight hours and is expected to be completed this fall.
o    Roadwork hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 7 pm to 6 am; Fridays from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., and Sundays from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. 
o    In areas where the roadway is four lanes, at least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times. 
o    Electronic message signs will be posted.
o    Motorists can expect 15-20 minute delays.

Highway 1 at Fremont St.: October 8 - 12
·       Caltrans will be working day and night on Highway 1 at Fremont St. Crews will be paving and working on the bridge, Monday through Friday, October 8 - 12, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., and 8 a.m. to noon.
o    This work will require lane closures.
o    Motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.

Traffic Advisories from Monterey County Public Works
·       Old Stage Road in Salinas will have a lane closure from Herbert Road to Crazy Horse Canyon, between September 14 and October 31.
o    PG&E is replacing a gas main.
o    Crews will be working Mondays through Saturdays, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
o    Traffic controls are in place.
o    Expect delays of up to 15 minutes.
