DETOUR FOR SOUTHBOUND HIGHWAY 101 TRAFFIC IN NORTH SALINAS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 29

Shift will make room for construction of new lanes on 101 as Prunedale Improvement Project moves forward

MONTEREY COUNTY – Traffic patterns on Highway 101 in north Salinas will change the evening of September 29, when a new detour road paralleling Highway 101 will open for southbound traffic.

The detour will start a quarter mile south of Ralph Lane; southbound 101 traffic will shift on to the new road, then move back on to Highway 101 at Boronda Road.

The detour, which is part of the construction of the Prunedale Improvement Project, will move traffic away from the area where the new Sala Road overcrossing will be built.

Northbound traffic will stay on the regular northbound lanes of Hwy 101.

This is the first phase of detours for the Prunedale Improvement Project; a second is scheduled to begin October 12, when the northbound Hwy 101 traffic will move on to the detour.

Both detours will be in place for approximately one year, while the new Sala Road overcrossing and northbound Hwy 101 lanes are constructed.

All detour durations are subject to construction progress.

The Prunedale Improvement Project addresses traffic safety issues along Highway 101, from Espinosa/Russell Roads in Salinas north to Crazy Horse Canyon/Echo Valley Roads. The project includes construction of three new interchanges /overpasses and a continuous median barrier from Crazy Horse Canyon to Russell/Espinosa. These safety measures will eliminate left turns across Hwy 101, reduce delays on US 101, provide safer access for local business and residents and provide congestion relief for the thousands of vehicles that travel through the corridor every day.
