ROAD AND LANE CLOSURES FOR NOVEMBER 1 – NOVEMBER 7

Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, November 1 through Saturday, November 7, 2015 – newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Highway 1 – Gorda to Ragged Point
  • A major retaining wall construction project will result in daytime traffic control and full night time closures of Highway 1 between Gorda and Ragged Point from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Night work will take place Sunday nights through Friday mornings.
  • Motorists traveling north/south of these closures are advised to reach their destinations before 10 p.m.
  • All local businesses along the coast will remain open during the roadwork. 
  • Motorists should expect daytime delays of approximately 10 minutes.
Highway 1 – South of Lucia
  • A ½-mile project to construct a viaduct will result in one-way signalized traffic control, 24/7, 18 miles south of Big Sur near Lucia from south of Big Creek Bridge to south of Dolan Creek Bridge.
  • All local businesses along the coast will remain open during the roadwork. 
  • Motorists should expect daytime delays of approximately 15 minutes.

  • Bridge repair work on Highway 1 at multiple locations between Willow Creek Bridge and Castro Canyon Bridge from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Highway 1 – Big Sur: November 2 – November 6
  • Daytime drainage clearing along Highway 1 between Point Sur and Garrapata Creek Bridge from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Highway 1 – Monterey: November 2 – November 5
  • Daytime tree removal at multiple locations along Highway 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • The locations are:
    • Northbound Casa Verde Way on-ramp – Monday, November 2
    • Northbound Highway 1 at Mesa Drive – Tuesday, November 3
    • Southbound Highway 1 Munras Avenue off-ramp – Wednesday, November 4
    • Southbound Highway 1 at Fremont Street – Thursday, November 5
PG&E Gas Line Replacement Project – Highway 68
  • Gas line replacement work will result in night time lane closures along eastbound and westbound Highway 68 between Olmstead Road and Josselyn Canyon Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Highway 101 – King City: November 2 – November 6
  • Daytime tree removal along the southbound lane of Highway 101 between Central Avenue and Hobson Avenue from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. One lane will be closed for the tree removal.
  • Motorists should expect daytime delays of approximately 10 minutes.  
Highway 101 – San Ardo to Salinas: November 2 – November 6
  • Daytime and night time bridge work along Highway 101 from San Ardo to Alisal Street in Salinas.
Highway 101 – Prunedale: November 2 – November 6
  • Night time paving along southbound Highway 101 between Tustin Road and Blackie Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Message Boards will be posted alerting motorists.
  • The CHP will be assisting with safety and traffic control.
  • Motorists can expect a delay not to exceed 15 minutes.
Highway 198 – November 2 – November 6
  • Daytime slide removal along Highway 198 between Pine Valley Road and the Fresno County line from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Salinas: Hitchcock Road Traffic Signal Project
  • A project to install traffic signals and realign a portion of Highway 68 at Hitchcock Road continues.
  • The #2 (right) lane of westbound Hwy. 68 will be closed at this location Monday through Thursday from 8 am until 6 pm and from 8 am until 4 pm on Fridays.
  • There will be a two-day overnight closure of Hitchcock Road Monday. Nov. 2 and Tuesday, Nov. 3 from 6 pm until 7 am
  • Hitchcock Road will remain open at Davis Road with access maintained for local residents.
  • Motorists can expect delays not too exceed ten minutes.

  • The City of Salinas is constructing its first modern Roundabout at the East Alisal/Skyway intersection in Salinas.  Modern roundabouts generally provide the most efficient way of managing traffic through an intersection, while providing the benefits of fewer conflict points between pedestrians and motorists, which enhances pedestrian safety, reduces congestion and average vehicle delay, generating less pollution (via fewer vehicle stops and starts).
  • Current work consists of completing the irrigation and landscape improvements.
  • Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays.

  • Traffic control consists of one-way reversing traffic control with flagging
  • Motorists should expect delays of approximately 15 minutes.
Salinas: Hitchcock Road Traffic Signal Project
  • A project to install traffic signals and realign a portion of Highway 68 at Hitchcock Road continues.
  • The #2 (right) lane of westbound Hwy. 68 will be closed at this location Monday through Thursday from 8 am until 6 pm and from 8 am until 4 pm on Fridays.

Salinas: Sanborn Road Waterline Project: Fairview Avenue – Eucalyptus Drive

  • The 12” water main within Sanborn Road that extends from Fairview Avenue to Eucalyptus Drive (roughly 1.1 miles long), is 99% complete. Crews are now focused on final paving and putting it into active service. There will be small localized lane closures as crews wrap up this large project. This water main will increase our fire protection and capacity in the area. California Water Service wants to thank the public once again for their patience and understanding during the construction of this project.

The City of Salinas is constructing its first modern Roundabout at the East Alisal/Skyway intersection in Salinas.  Modern roundabouts generally provide the most efficient way of managing traffic through an intersection, while providing the benefits of fewer conflict points between pedestrians and motorists, which enhances pedestrian safety, reduces congestion and average vehicle delay, generating less pollution (via fewer vehicle stops and starts).

Over the next 2 weeks, the contractor will be:

1.  Completing the paver installation;
2.  Completing the irrigation and landscape improvements;
3.  Completing bio-swales that will clean storm water runoff from paved areas before discharging into the storm drain system;
4.  Installing pavement markings and striping;
5. Cleaning the site and addressing punch list items.

 Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays. 

Salinas: Sanborn Road Waterline Project: Fairview Avenue – Eucalyptus Drive
In a continuing effort to improve water distribution to its customers (with sufficient pressure and quantity), California Water Service Company is undertaking several water main upgrades within the Salinas city limits.  One of the more significant upgrades is the upcoming installation of a 12” water main within Sanborn Road that will extend from Fairview Avenue to Eucalyptus Drive (roughly 1.1 miles long), constructed in phases beginning at Fairview, and ending at Eucalyptus. Traffic controls for lane closures will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.  To lessen the impact on traffic work in the intersections of John Street, E. Alisal street and E. Market Street will be done at night.


Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to destinations or travel outside of the construction times.  Motorists should expect delays along the Sanborn Road corridor in the vicinity of work during construction.  The contractor for the project is West Valley Construction Company. They have assured Cal water that all driveways to businesses in the area will remain open during construction. California Water Service apologizes for any inconvenience this project may cause and wants to thank the public for their patience during the construction of this project.

Pacific Grove: Hwy 68 West (Forest) and David Avenue Project
Crews will begin a construction project to replace a masonry retaining wall with a soldier pile wall, remove and replace a signal, reconstruct drainage and replace a fence at the intersection of Hwy. 68 West (Forest) and David Avenues on Monday, September 14th.

The right turn lane onto David Avenue from Forest Avenue will be closed 24/7 with a temporary guardrail. Traffic will be detoured. Primary work hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Motorists can expect 15-20 minute delays during the morning and afternoon commutes (7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.) and 10-15 minutes delays during non-commute hours.

Note: David Avenue traffic will only be affected during daytime work hours. The project is scheduled for completion in November.
