ROAD AND LANE CLOSURES APRIL 26 - MAY 3



Here are the major scheduled road and lane closures for Monterey County from Sunday, April 26 through Sunday, May 3, 2015 – newest information is in red. Please keep in mind that construction work is weather-dependent.

Highway 1 – Big Sur Coast: April 27 & April 28
  • Daytime roadwork at two locations along Highway 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The locations are:
    • Kirk Creek Camp to Rain Rock for tree removal on Tuesday, April 28.
    • Lime Creek Bridge for tree removal on Monday, April 27.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes
PG&E Gas Line Replacement Project – Highway 68: April 26 – May 2
  • Gas line replacement work will result in night time lane closures along eastbound and westbound Highway 68 between Olmsted Road and San Benancio Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 15 minutes
Highway 101 – San Juan Road Interchange Project: April 26 – May 1
  • Night time paving along southbound Highway 101 between Dunbarton Road (South) and Cannon Road/Rocks Road from 7:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
  • The southbound San Juan Road exit will be subject to closure from 7:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.
    • Motorists should detour to Crazy Horse Canyon Road.
  • Motorists should expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.

BIG SUR INTERNATIONAL MARATHON TO BE RUN ALONG HIGHWAY 1 ON SUNDAY, APRIL 26

MONTEREY COUNTY (CARMEL/BIG SUR) – The Big Sur International Marathon will be run along Highway 1 beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 26.  The race will start in Big Sur and will end at Rio Road in Carmel.

Traffic on Highway 1 will be restricted from 6:00 am until 1:30 pm from Sycamore Canyon Road to Carmel Valley Road. While the southbound lane is closed for the race, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will use the northbound lane to lead caravans of traffic in alternating directions at three different intervals during this time.  The CHP will also manage a closure for left turns from Rio Road onto southbound Hwy. 1 from 3:30 am until 1:30 pm. Therefore, motorists traveling in both directions should expect delays of up to two hours.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway work zones.

Highway 1 – Big Sur Coast: April 20 – April 24
  • Daytime roadwork at multiple locations along Highway 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • The locations are:
    • Torre Canyon Bridge to Grimes Canyon for drainage work.
    • Castro Canyon Bridge for bridge inspection.
    • Ventana Entrance to the Post Office for drainage work.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes
PG&E Gas Line Replacement Project – Highway 68: April 20 – April 25
  • Gas line replacement work will result in night time lane closures along eastbound and westbound Highway 68 between Olmsted Road and San Benancio Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 15 minutes
Highway 68/South Main Street – Salinas: April 20 – April 24
  • Daytime utility work along eastbound South Main Street between Romie Lane and Oak Street/Geil Street from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Motorists should expect delays of approximately 5 minutes.
Highway 101 – Greenfield to Soledad: April 19 – April 24
  • Daytime and night time median barrier and ramp work along Highway 101 between Espinosa Road and Arroyo Seco Road.
  • Motorists should expect delays of approximately 10 minutes.
Highway 101 – San Juan Road Interchange Project: April 19 – April 24
  • Night time paving along southbound Highway 101 between Dunbarton Road (South) and Cannon Road/Rocks Road from 7:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

Highway 1 – Big Sur Coast: April 13 – April 17
  • Daytime roadwork at two locations along Highway 1 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The locations are:
    • Anderson Canyon Bridge to Fullers Point for drainage work.
    • Ventana Entrance to the Post Office for drainage work.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes
Highway 1 – Carmel: April 13 – April 17
  • Culvert installation will result in night time lane closures and daytime shoulder closures along northbound Highway 1 in front of Morse Drive and Carmel High School.
  • The work hours are:
    • Daytime shoulder closures from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Night time lane closures from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes
Highway 1 – Carmel to Santa Cruz County: April 15 – April 17
  • Daytime vegetation spraying along northbound and southbound Highway 1 from the Carmel River Bridge to the Santa Cruz County Line from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes

  • Gas line replacement work will result in night time lane closures along eastbound and westbound Highway 68 at two locations from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • The locations are:
    • Between Route 218/Canyon Del Rey and Olmsted Road.
    • Between San Benancio Road and Quail Ridge Lane
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 15 minutes
Highway 101 – Greenfield to Soledad: April 12 – April 17

  • Daytime roadwork at two locations along Highway 1 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • The locations are:
    • Ventana Entrance to the Post Office for drainage work and slope clearing.
    • Little Sur River Bridge to Garrapata Creek Bridge for drainage work.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes
Highway 1 – Carmel: April 6 – April 10
  • Culvert installation will result in night time lane closures and daytime shoulder closures along northbound Highway 1 in front of Morse Drive and Carmel High School.
  • The work hours are:
    • Daytime shoulder closures from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Night time lane closures from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes
Highway 1 – Monterey: April 6 – April 10
  • Night time embankment stabilization will result in the closure of the southbound Highway 1 ramp to Highway 68/Holman Highway from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • Electronic message signs will be posted to alert and direct motorists to the signed detour.
  • Motorists can expect delays of approximately 10 minutes

  • Gas line replacement work will result in night time lane closures along eastbound and westbound Highway 68 between San Benancio Road and Quail Ridge Lane from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
